Stories of Two-Spirit Residential and Day School Survivors

Canada’s Indian Residential Schools (IRS) caused irreparable harm to First Nations families across many generations. 2Spirit (Indigenous LGBTQ) people were among those impacted, however their stories have rarely been heard, documented, or shared in the general discourse about this era. Following the closure of the last IRS in Ft. Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, in 1996, there is a generation of 2Spirit former students who are available to engage in this project. The 2Spirit Council of Fierté Canada Pride lead the engagement of 2Spirit survivors and assisted and supported them to tell their stories.

The goal of this project was to recruit eight 2Spirit Indian Residential School Survivors (Story Tellers) to participate in a speaker series project in order to preserve and share their stories. Our Project Coordinator worked with Story Tellers through a series of storytelling workshops, and supported them in documenting and sharing their story through the project.

Les pensionnats indiens du Canada ont causé des blessures irréparables aux familles des Premières Nations sur plusieurs générations. Les personnes 2Esprit (autochtones LGBTQ) faisaient partie des personnes touchées, mais leurs histoires ont rarement été entendues, documentées ou partagées dans le discours général sur cette époque. Suite à la fermeture du dernier pensionnat indien à Ft. Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, en 1996, il y a une génération d'ancien·ne·s élèves 2Esprit qui sont disponibles pour s'engager dans ce projet. Le Conseil 2Esprit de Fierté Canada Pride a dirigé l’engagement des survivant·e·s 2Esprits et les a aidés et soutenus à raconter leur histoire.

Le but de ce projet était de recruter huit survivant·e·s 2Esprit des pensionnats indiens (conteur·e·s d'histoires) pour participer à un projet de série de conférences afin de préserver et de partager leurs histoires. Notre coordo du projet a travaillé avec les conteur·e·s d'histoires à travers une série d'ateliers de narration et les a aidés à documenter et à partager leur histoire tout au long du projet.
